SAMR was created by one man : Jules Coste, a man with a passion for mechanics.
In 1947, Jules Coste found sliding bearings for post-war engine repairs hard to come by and so decided to set up Société d'Application du Métal Rouge in the outskirts of Troyes, in north-eastern France .
He successfully created a stable alloy of two immiscible materials and perfected the tricky process of centrifugally casting antifriction metal linings; in doing so, he enabled the company to quickly grow as a major force in the automobile market until the end of the 1970's .
By this time, the company had 50 employees, sold its sliding bearings by mail order, had a stand at the Paris international automobile trade fair and its own outlet in the Levallois-Perret , district of Paris...
